June 2nd is going to be a special one for Phoenix residents as they celebrate the city’s newest holiday, 602 Day!

What is 602 Day?

It is a celebration of the city and its longest-standing area code. The 602 area code dates back to 1947, when AT&T assigned the 602 prefix to the entire state of Arizona as part of its nationwide telephone numbering plan.

The population of Arizona grew slowly and wasn’t large enough to merit a second area code until forty-eight years later, when in 1995, the 520 area code was put in place to cover Tucson and the southern part of the state. Later, the 623 and 480 area codes were added. However, 602 will always be the city’s original area code.

In a recent city press release, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said, “I invite residents to join their friends and families for a day or two of fun showing support for small businesses and iconic Phoenix institutions.  Let’s show the world how we 602!”*

How will Phoenix Celebrate?

602 Day will feature events, community engagement opportunities and discounts at small business throughout the city. The Phoenix Parks & Recreation Department will give out free 602 T-shirts at the city’s many public pools. Local eateries, breweries, and stores will offer discounts with over 100 local businesses participating. Look out for special $6.02 prices!

A list of all the city-hosted events, as well as a map of the businesses participating and offering discounts, is available at Phoenix’s 602 Day website.**
